Directed by Derren Nesbitt, U.K. The more British sex comedies I watch, the more I sense it’s a genre full of melancholia. Despite the double entendres, softcore fumblings, and speeded-up comedy sequences, just under the surface there’s a socially-charged pathos. There’s also a more general wistfulness, of course, involving the genre’s place in a flagging British film industry. The ordinariness of THE AMOROUS MILKMAN is staggering: it’s there in the wallpaper in Diana Dors’s kitchen, the enervated gags, the down-to-earth nature of the titular character’s profession. The movie ends with our hero being arrested for rape and getting badly beaten up. A strange, sad experience. 3/5.
