Directed by Tobe Hooper, U.S.A. On its own terms, EATEN ALIVE is an okay little movie. The problem is, it’s impossible to judge “on its own terms,” because this is the film that Tobe Hooper made after the stunning TEXAS CHAIN SAW MASSACRE. Placed in that context, EATEN ALIVE becomes (rightly or wrongly) an immediate disappointment. Suddenly, its weaknesses become all the more glaring. Up until the final ten minutes, there’s very little sense of momentum to the screenplay (involving Neville Brand as a murderous hotelier with a pet crocodile), while the staginess of the sets makes the film seem small compared to the wide open spaces of CHAIN SAW. 3/5.
