Directed by Brian De Palma, U.S.A. An exhausting, absorbing, all-time classic of crime cinema. Al Pacino gives a devastating performance as Tony Montana, a toerag Cuban who rises from the gutter to become the powerful kingpin of an international drugs cartel. There are so many great moments here: the chainsaw scene, the confrontation with former boss Lopez (Robert Loggia), and the tense car bomb sequence are just three. The whole thing ends in an orgy of blood-letting in the style of a Jacobean tragedy (only with more machine guns). Lovely, typically excessive direction from De Palma and an endlessly quotable screenplay by Oliver Stone. 5/5.
